This artwork is an original painting on canvas and forms part of an ongoing series of portrait style studies of birds.
'Birds rarely stay still, making them tricky to observe long enough to paint.'
'Stuffed’ depicts birds that have been captured and immortalised in the glass cabinets on exhibition in national museums. This particular creature was seen by the artist in Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, where friends remarked the animals must have been there since they were children which inspired the artist to capture the expression and character of these birds on canvas, frozen in time.
'My mobile phone had a Union Jack case (not through choice, as no longer an iconically exportable cool motif) The reflection in the glass when photographing the enclosed bird seemed rather apt, so I worked with it. Situational, coincidental became intentional. Identity is everything. A Navy Officer I believe this bird was. Back in the colonial day.'
The series continues an appreciation of birds both as creatures and as a motif for the artist. Birds feature in other works such as the popular Brighton Tidal Sunsets series which depicts the murmuration of starlings around Brighton Pier.
