Lampshade Care & Bulb Safety FAQ
Lampshade Care & Bulb Safety FAQ
Bulb Compatibility & Fittings
What type of bulb fitting do Smartylamps shades use?
Smartylamps pendant lampshades are designed for standard ES (E27) and BC (B22) pendant fittings. Please check your individual product listing for the fitting type recommended for your specific shade, as this can vary between models.
Can I use LED bulbs with my Smartylamps shade?
Yes — LED bulbs are strongly recommended. They produce the same light output (measured in lumens) as traditional bulbs at a much lower wattage, and crucially they run cool, which protects the shade material and reduces energy use. Look for a bulb labelled with its lumen value rather than relying on watts alone.
Can I use old-style incandescent or filament bulbs?
No. Smartylamps does not recommend incandescent or filament bulbs. They convert a large proportion of their energy into heat rather than light, which can cause the shade to overheat. Please use energy-saving LED or CFL bulbs only.
Recommended Wattage
What wattage bulb should I use?
As a general guide:
- Standard pendant lampshades: 11 W LED (equivalent to a 60 W incandescent)
- Small, narrow, or free-standing lamp shades: 8 W LED (equivalent to a 40 W incandescent / candle bulb)
For full guidance on lumens, watts, and choosing the right bulb, see our Smartylamps Wattage Guide.
Does higher wattage mean a brighter bulb?
Not necessarily. Watts measure energy consumption, not brightness. Brightness is measured in lumens — the higher the lumen value, the brighter the light. An 11 W LED can produce the same brightness as a 60 W incandescent bulb. Always check the lumen rating when choosing a replacement.
Can I use a dimmable bulb?
Yes, energy-saving dimmable LED bulbs are available and compatible, provided your light fitting and dimmer switch are also rated for LED use. Check the bulb packaging to confirm dimmer compatibility before purchase.
Safe Handling
How long should I wait before touching the shade or bulb after switching off?
Even with LED bulbs, we recommend switching off the light and allowing at least 10 minutes for the bulb and fitting to cool before handling, adjusting, or cleaning the shade. Never handle a shade with the light switched on.
Is it safe to leave a Smartylamps shade on for extended periods?
Smartylamps shades are designed for normal domestic use with compatible, correctly wattaged LED or energy-saving bulbs. Do not exceed the recommended wattage, as this can cause overheating. Never leave a lamp unattended if you have any doubt about the bulb type or fitting.
Cleaning Your Lampshade
How do I clean a polypropylene (plastic) lampshade?
For polypropylene shades, use a dry or very lightly dampened soft cloth to wipe away dust. Or use a little washing up liquid and hot water to clean. Avoid soaking the material or applying liquid cleaners, solvents, or abrasive cloths, as these can damage the printed surface or warp the shade.
How do I clean a fabric lampshade?
Gently dust fabric shades with a soft, dry brush or lint roller. Do not apply water or liquid cleaners directly to the fabric, as this can cause water marks, shrinkage, or damage to the lining. If in doubt, consult a specialist fabric cleaner.
Can I use spray cleaners or polishes on my lampshade?
No. Aerosol sprays, furniture polishes, and chemical cleaners are not suitable for lampshade materials. Use dry cleaning methods only unless otherwise specified in your product's care instructions.
Assembly & Fitting
How do I fit my Smartylamps pendant lampshade?
Smartylamps pendant shades are designed to fit over a standard pendant light fitting. Feed the pendant cable through the gimbal or ring at the top of the shade, then secure according to the instructions included with your shade. Always ensure the electricity supply is switched off at the mains before fitting or adjusting a lampshade.
I'm assembling a Smartylamps Flatpack kit — is there a guide?
Yes. Assembly instructions are included with every Flatpack kit. If you have misplaced yours, please contact us and we will send a replacement copy.
Replacement Parts
Can I order replacement parts or fittings for my Smartylamps shade?
We may be able to supply replacement components or supply a replacement lampshade, depending on the circumstances. Please contact us with your order details and the part you need, and we will do our best to help.
My shade has been damaged — can it be repaired?
